Summary:Habitat heterogeneity and biodiversity have been threatened by over-exploitation in the Arasbaran Protected Area, an important but little researched nature reserve in Iran. The soil seed bank was evaluated to gauge whether there are sufficient species represented as persistent seeds to reconstitute vegetation in the event of habitat deterioration. Differences were noted between seed banks from different soils and vegetation types, but all soil seed banks hosted few species and low densities of seed. The species in the seed bank were not representative of the vegetation.
