Summary:Ukraine is facing the toughest security and economic challenges in its modern history. The effects of a decades-long lukewarm approach to important structural economic reforms have merely been amplified by the Russian military intervention and the loss of important export markets. The problems concerning the Ukrainian economy are epitomized by the country’s energy sector. The article aims to address the challenges of energy reform in Ukraine, paying particular attention to assistance provided by the Slovak Republic to tackle policy challenges and advance the necessary reforms. Reform of the natural gas sector, use of domestic resources – including renewable – and the implementation of energy efficiency and energy conservation measures have all been identified as being fundamental to the further economic growth, stability and prosperity of Ukraine’s energy intensive and energy inefficient economy. Experiences and engagement in the energy sector, particularly energy efficiency, could be an export commodity available to other Eastern Partnership countries. The Slovak Republic has a wealth of experience to share, notably regarding legislation, central heating systems, state support for thermal insulation and so forth.
