Summary:As political events in EU and all across the world unfold in a less and less predictable manner, ive witness a de facto return of the most developed economies to various stages of neo-protectionism, mainly of non-tariff consistence. The WTO's global trade liberalism, approach that was also the blueprint of EU's economic policy during a long period of time, seems to be somehow worn out today. Our paper tries to identify those coordinates that could be described as optimal in the process of evolution of the domain towards strengthening the protection of EU's single market and meanwhile not jeopardizing European international trading chances through various retaliation effects. We attempt to illustrate our viezv through some Romanian examples of the economic trade-off implied by the liberalization of the domestic market following EU membership.
