Summary:They stood staring out, grim-lipped, huge and hollow-eyed: seven stone giants of Easter Island. Impassive, implacable, they towered over the landscape, dwarfing even the hills behind them. They were facing the sea yet they seemed to be staring beyond the horizon and into the past, where their cannibal-sculptors danced before them on the stone-cobbled plazas, then threw the ika--those chosen to be cooked and eaten--into the umu (stone-lined ovens), to be baked into a stew with chickens and sweet potatoes.
