Summary: | Disgraced surgeon loses funding and job but won't face misconduct investigation.
Paolo Macchiarini, the controversial surgeon who was fired by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm in March 2016 for multiple ethical violations, has now lost his position in Russia as well. The Russian government had showered Macchiarini with grant money to work on artificial tracheas and esophagi; he performed operations on five patients in Russia, and was hailed as a scientific start in the Russian media. But the Russian Science Foundation will not renew its funding for Macchiarini's work, and Kazan Federal University, Macchiarini's current employer, has effectively fired him. Yet Macchiarini will apparently not face misconduct investigations in Russia. |
