Chronic management If no reversible cause is found, a permanent pacemaker should be implanted to avoid future symptoms and to improve survival. 9 An atrial lead is redundant in permanent atrial fibrillation so a single chamber ventricular on-demand system would be the most appropriate device, providing that left ventricular systolic function is preserved.
