Description
Summary:Since that first meeting in 1989, I have been involved in research into the oral health problems of older people and have been a member of the Geriatric Oral Health Research Group of IADR since its foundation. [...]we have frighteningly little information about how periodontal disease progresses in older age, particularly when there is a wealth of information about changes in the immune response in older people with reductions in T-cell activity and an altered inflammatory response to a specific challenge (Wu and Meydani 2008). [...]how are we going to manage older people who are edentulous? [...]I would acknowledge the funders who have supported my work over the years—particularly, the Medical Research Council, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, and the UK Government, as well as the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, and industrial support from GlaxoSmithKline and Unilever.
