Summary: | The art publications of Mary Philadelphia Merrifield (1804-89), which appeared during the 1840s, were among the first in English to attempt to elucidate early artists' techniques. They were based on the meticulous transcription, translation, and annotation of historical manuscripts and written sources. Merrifield set out to understand historical techniques by assembling evidence--from written sources, the close study of the physical material of paintings, and experimental trials--thus helping to lay the foundation for a scientific understanding of paintings that still informs conservation treatment and technical art history today.
