Summary:Acute esophageal necrosis (AEN), also reported as “black esophagus” or “acute necrotizing esophagitis,” rarely as “esophageal infarction,” is a condition first described in 1990 by Goldenberg, and later better characterized by Gurvits, and so named as “Gurvits’s syndrome.” It has a typical endoscopic aspect and is almost invariably associated with severe clinical conditions and serious comorbidities.
