Summary:Urinary tract infection (UTI) in young infants is considered to be an important risk factor for acquired renal damage and scarring. [...]one should question the value of diagnosing reflux in early infancy. Furthermore, the conce pt that CAKUT (Co ngenital Anomaly of the Kidney and Urinary Tract) represents a spectrum of renal tract anomalies has given rise to embryonic development studies that have shown that lateral ureteral budding, also called displacement, is associated with ureteric reflux, some degree of ureteric dysplasia and reduced induction of kidney development resulting in renal dysplasia or hypoplasia.
