Summary: | Today's global and consumer driven economy requires knowledge of plant health management practices and challenges beyond one's own borders. Introductions of invasive plant pests, including plant pathogens, arthropods and weeds, can have a devastating impact on agriculture and natural resources. The future of agricultural productivity and marketing will depend largely on the ability of broadly trained plant health professionals to manage indigenous plant health problems, prevent the introduction of alien pests and take rapid action to minimize deleterious impacts should a pest introduction occur. The certificate program in Plant Pest Risk Assessment and Management provides a unique opportunity for University of Florida graduate students to develop the personal and professional skills required to effectively lead and conduct plant pest risk assessment and management on the local, national and international level through related coursework and internships. |
