description This study analyses the effects of general torsion on the behaviour of single story and irregular plan structures under seismic action, by comparing results obtained from applying two methods: one simplified method for the evaluation of the displacement gain due to general torsion and one method of dynamic nonlinear analysis. The first method, called SESA, is based on the capacity spectrum method and tries to establish the displacement gain due to general torsion but also to maintain the simplicity of the spectral analysis (elastic calculation). The second method applies to structures that can be modeled as single story systems having three dynamic degrees of freedom. The structural systems studied in this paper are one torsionally flexible structure and one torsionally stiff structure. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
