Summary: | Temporal variability in sulfur dioxide (SO sub(2)) exposures at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park (HVNP), USA was examined. Empirical statistical associations between SO sub(2) and wind in 48 months of hourly time series data collected at the HVNP Visitor Center (VC) by the Air Resources Division of the National Park Service were also examined. During 1998-2001 there was a strong association and statistically significant relationship between hourly wind direction and hourly SO sub(2) at the HVNP VC. The results indicated that there was a higher probability of elevated SO sub(2) when wind was blowing from the volcanic vents to the VC. The most common wind condition was east-northeast trades, and while trade winds were normally associated with very low SO sub(2), they were sometimes associated with elevated SO sub(2). |
