Summary: | If VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol, or "digital telephone") was the technology story of 2005, Skype (www.skype.com) was the biggest VoIP story. As 2005 drew to a close, eBay announced it had agreed to buy Skype in hopes of using its technology to connect buyers and sellers. The price tag? A whopping US$4.1 billion. The sale brought mainstream attention to Skype, a leading provider of VoIP services, and marked it as a tool that's no longer just for the digiterati. Similar services provided by Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, AOL and others are emerging, price wars over their rates have broken out, and just about everyone seems to be using Skype or one of its competitors. Its adoption by lawyers can't be far behind. |
