Summary: | Impacts of land-use type on nitrate concentration and delta super(15)N in unconfined groundwater in rural areas of Korea were examined. The characteristics of nitrate contamination clearly differed with land-use activities. The results showed that unconfined groundwater was susceptible to land-use activities above the aquifers, and the impacts of the activities could be more precisely inferred from long-term data on the concentration and delta super(15)N of nitrate. By determining the impacts, more effective measures for preventing groundwater quality could be implemented. A correlation between the concentration and delta super(15)N of nitrate indicated that compost had a greater influence on groundwater quality than synthetic fertilizer. The nitrate contamination characteristics examined suggested that widespread contamination of rural groundwater with nitrate in central Korea would continue unless agricultural land-use practices are changed. |
