Summary: | Vinopal discusses the story of Christina Jimenez Moreta a genius winner of 2017 MacArthur about what it means to be an undocumented immigrant. Among other things Immigration reform is a deeply personal subject to Moreta, who splits her time between Washington and New York. When she was 13, her parents brought her and her brother from Quito Ecuador, to New York City. At the time, gang violence was rampant in Moreta's home country. For Moreta, winning the MacArthur was a big validation--and also a shock. I couldn't believe it, she says. I was like, is this really happening? As the news was sinking in, the first thing I thought about was my parents and their sacrifice. |
