Summary: | The sulfate reduction which is characteristic of many aquifers contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) was examined in a field experiment. Sulfate reduction was measured as a function of sulfate consumption during a "push-pull" well test. The injection of an anoxic test solution into the sulfate reducing zone of the aquifer was followed by an incubation period (42 h), and sequenced groundwater extraction over several days. Bromide, sulfate, and sulfide were measured. Microbially mediated sulfate reduction activity occurred near the test well. |
