Description
Summary:Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS), also known as high-intensity focused ultrasound, is a totally noninvasive procedure that combines two technologies: First, high-intensity focused ultrasound waves that are convened to thermal energy at a precise focal point which rises tissue temperature target area to approximately 65°C to 85°C resulting in irreversible thermal ablation of the tissue. Second, magnetic resonance-based three-dimensional imaging of the focal point plus real-time monitoring of the tissue temperature in the target/one. The combination of the two technologies forms a relatively safe and effective ablative procedure. Here, Eisenberg et al present a case of a woman with cervical cancer, who received MRgFUS treatment for a painful iliac bone metastasis diagnosed by high fluorodeoxyglucose uptake on a positron emission tomography-CT study. After treatment, she reported significant reduction in pain and opioid consumption.
