Summary:The fact that the kid is obsessed with violent videos is really beside the point for [Michael Haneke], who analyses a society where mediation of reality becomes confusion about what is real and what isn't, where communication in a world of images ceases to be possible except through mediation of technology. The scene where [Benny] confesses his crime through a video to his parents and they reply in kind is absolutely chilling. Another great look at bourgeois alienation and social decay presented as technological progress. Certain critics have labeled his work as "difficult," when the opposite is the case. Haneke's work is intricate, startling and exhilarating for anyone who loves cinema for its possibilities as well as its predictability. And for all those that love the last scene in Antonioni's Zabrisfci Point.
