Summary: | This study investigates the phenoloxidase activity of a glandular substance that is supposedly injected in prey by Speleonectes sp. Phenoloxidase in that substance may be derived from a hemocyanin-like component produced by glands of the injecting apparatus and may cause deleterious effects on prey. We describe general morphology of the postulated injection apparatus of Speleonectes sp. and measurements of phenoloxidase activity of the putative injected substance. We also describe deleterious effects of a manually injected phenoloxidase (laccase) on Palaemonetes pugio Holthuis, 1949. |
