Summary: | A new generation of chalcogenide based ion-selective flow-injection detectors (ISFID) for free cyanide has been developed, based on thin film electrodeposited Ag2+ delta Se1-xTex membrane. Detailed performance characterization of the detector has shown that it meets the stringent requirements of most of the environmental regulatory agencies for toxic cyanide monitoring as far as the observed low detection limit of 75ppb, free cyanide species selectivity and long-term stability are concerned. Moreover, the cost-effective technology for its preparation and easy re-generation makes is attractive candidate for incorporation into automated in-field devices for in situ cyanide monitoring. The renaissance of the dicyanoargentate(I) indicator technique by its successful adapting to flow-injection mode has allowed for further decrease of the lower detection limit down to 15ppb. The complementary usage of both direct and indicator flow-methods opens the way to simple and reliable cyanide speciation in complex effluent matrices. |
