Summary: | In 2004, approximately 52,000 US farms received income from farm-based recreation, totaling about $955 million. As farmers look for alternative sources of income, farm recreation may expand to play a more important role in the future. According to USDA's 2004 Agricultural Resource Management Survey, the South accounts for more than half of all US farms receiving recreational income. A recent ERS study found that both farm-based and place-based factors are associated with farm-to-farm variation in agritourism. Among place-based variables, the greater the farm's distance to a city of at least 10,000 population, the greater the likelihood of the farm's participation in a recreation business. |
