Description
Summary:Distribution of super(152)Eu between magnesium hydroxide bulk, colloids and solution under alkaline conditions is studied. The effect of the strongly complexing carbonate ion on the distribution of radioeuropium is investigated. The role played by the different fractions of colloids in the scavenging of radioeuropium is assessed. A significant uptake of super(152)Eu by the colloids in solution is observed. This uptake decreases with increasing carbonate concentration, due to competition for super(142)Eu between carbonate and colloids. The fractionation of the colloidal phase demonstrates that super(152)Eu is mainly associated to the smallest colloids. There is a strong correlation between the amount of Eu bound and the total surface area of each fraction.
