Description
Summary:Application of super(15)N natural abundance technique for evaluating biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in oil palm ecotypes at nursery stage in pot experiments and at mature plantation sites is studied. The use of the super(15)N natural abundance technique allows confirmation that some ecotypes of oil palm at nursery stage are able to obtain significant contributions from plant-associated N super(2) fixation. At the nursery stage the differences in delta super(15)N among the ecotypes suggest that some of them can be benefiting from BNF with N inputs from air corresponding to something close to 50% of the accumulated N. The results show that several of the reference plants present natural super(15)N abundance lower than that observed in the oil palm tissues, suggesting the reference plants and ecotypes of oil palm explore very differently specific pool of soil N.
