Description
Summary:Bailey et al comment on a study by Haynes et al on the impact of air manganese on child neurodevelopment in East Liverpool OH. Although hair manganese (Mn) was used as a surrogate for exposure to Mn in ambient air, Bailey et al claim that the authors did not provide any analysis (e.g., correlation between hair Mn and air Mn) to support the validity of this surrogate measure. Nonetheless, the authors propose that the reported association is related to "elevated" levels of Mn in air. Bailey et al further claim that the study did not consider that the respirable fraction of Mn particulates represents the most biologically appropriate fraction from which to evaluate Mn risk.
