Summary: | Ouyang and Mehal discuss a study by Shao and colleagues which offered convincing evidence for an important role of HIF-1α in liver pathobiology. The study address the discrete hypothesis that HIF-1α is required for the physiological adaptation to excess alcohol consumption by transcriptional regulation of intestinal epithelial genes involved in homeostatic responses, including hepatic lipogenesis, maintenance of intestinal barrier function, antimicrobial defense, and the normal microbiome. Their important finding demonstrates a clear adaptive role of intestinal epithelial HIF-1α to alcohol. It also raises clear questions of the relative roles of the closely related HIF-1α and HIF-2α. |
