Description
Summary:The results of experimental studies of the fine thermal structure of the atmospheric near-water 100 m layer under light winds are presented. The experiments were carried out in the Black Sea and in the northwestern Pacific with the use of a tethered sounding balloon freely floating in the air. It is found that both the temperature and humidity profiles have a layered structure, which may significantly affect the transport of additives, heat and moisture fluxes, and the propagation of electromagnetic and acoustic waves of different frequency ranges in the atmospheric layer over the sea surface. The results of atmospheric sounding carried out simultaneously with a sounding balloon and an acoustic radar showed that scattering layers coincide closely with high-gradient air-density layers. It was first found from direct measurements that, during daylight hours in the tropics, the stratification of the atmospheric near-water layer is, on average, always stable.
