Description
Summary:Many libraries that began giving the public access to an electronic version of their card catalogs are rapidly adding other services, such as listings of community services, city council minutes, electronic encyclopedias, and calendars of local events. In many cases, patrons can order books from a distant library through the interlibrary-loan system. For example, the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries allows patrons to access the library computer systems of not only other Colorado libraries, but also the Maryland Department of Public Libraries, the University of Hawaii library system, the Northeastern University library system in Boston, and the University of California. There are plans for the eventual creation of a nationwide network of libraries. Another gateway to the library network is through Internet, a nationwide computer system.
