Summary: | Bayliss, Carey and Town examine a pair of portraits of Elizabeth I and her ambassador in France, Sir Amias Paulet. Both are identified as works by Nicholas Hilliard, painted during his time in France in 1576-1578. They provide for the first time a firm basis for identifying Hilliard's paintings on a large scale. Various anecdotal references indicate that Hilliard worked on full-size oil painting but until now it has been impossible to reconcile the material and documentary evidence. |
