Summary:Patients that presented to the pediatric emergency department from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014 with acute appendicitis were considered for inclusion. Age, sex, date and time of surgical consult, time from surgical consult to appendectomy, hospital length of stay (LOS), and overall charges of the hospital admission were collected. Other institutions have implemented a discharge pathway allowing nurses to routinely discharge patients once certain discharge criteria are met.3 By applying these techniques, additional savings might be identified that reduce the financial impact of a next-day appendectomy.
