Summary:The present study analyzed the aerosol particle deposition patterns, produced by the separate as well as the simultaneous action of deposition mechanisms (inertial impaction, gravitational settling, Brownian motion, and interception) in characteristic regions of the human airway system as a function of particle size and flow rate. The ratio of local to average deposition densities (enhancement factors) was computed by scanning along th whole surface of the bifurcation with a prespecified surface area element. Results showed that, in general, all deposition patterns caused by any deposition mechanisms are inhomogeneous in human airway bifurcations, both in the upper and lower regions of the human lung. This inhomogeneity usually increases with particle size and flow rate, and decreases with deeper penetration into the respiratory tract.
