Description
Summary:Using ward-level data from Census 2001, this paper finds high levels of residential segregation by caste in India's seven largest metro cities — Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad. In each of these cities, residential segregation by caste is more prominent than the level of segregation by socio-economic status. It offers some preliminary explanations for the observed differences in the level of residential segregation by caste across cities and highlights areas for future research.
