Summary:As Americans prepare to elect their next president, it's a good time to reflect on the kinds of qualities that make an individual an effective leader. While most of us will not face the demands of a president of the United States, there are some skills basic to all levels of leadership. As the president of a national organization, I've gained some insight into the subject of leadership that might help you to evaluate the candidates, and help you become a more effective leader in your own community or organization. Finally, effective problem-solving begins by honoring the trust that others have placed in you. On a personal level, nothing is more painful than losing someone's trust. As a national leader, losing the trust of your members will destroy your effectiveness and could be the one mistake that is nearly impossible to correct. You can avoid this dilemma by remembering two important rules of leadership: 1) Never make promises you can't keep and always keep the promises you make, and 2) Always treat your people and their ideas with dignity and respect. You can seriously disagree on issues or ideas and still maintain a respectful relationship.
