Aluminum mirror degradation in a vuv laser

Thermal calculations have been made for overcoated aluminum mirror structures of the type used in vacuum uv lasers. The resulting thermal profiles suggest the dominant mechanism for mirror failure to be melting of the aluminum. Design parameters to avoid rapid mirror degradation are discussed.
