Summary:Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government introduced the new law and started building the fence in response to a rapid influx of migrants since 2013, which has led to a rise in xenophobia in Hungary, with 46 percent of respondents in a national poll opposed to allowing any asylum seekers to enter the country. "Today's action underscores our resolve to maintain pressure on Russia for violating international law and fueling the conflict in eastern Ukraine," John E. Smith, acting director of the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control, said in a 30 July press release. According to the 2011 census, Poles make up 6.6 percent of the population, Russians 5.8 percent , Belarusians 1.2 percent and Ukrainians 0.5 percent.
