It is a symbol of our culture, as intimately tied to the life and soul of America as any other within our society. The very reason for this day at Fenway, this symposium on The Red Sox, Race & Jackie Robinson, is to understand, in ways perhaps not understood before, how critical the signing of Robinson 56 years ago by the Dodgers was to our history - not baseball's history, but America's history. But this event would be woefully incomplete if it did not remind each of us that while much has changed since Robinson made his brilliant baseball debut, we still have much to do. |
