Accelerated Corrosion Test to Determine the Continuity of Thin Oxide Films on Aluminum

The iodine-methanol immersion test will evaluate cracks, flaws or porosity disrupting the continuity of thin anodized films on 2024 Al in 1 to 8 hr compared with 16 to 50 hr by previous methods. The test uses 5 g I/100 ml absolute methanol in a petri dish containing comparative samples. Anodic oxide...

Description
Summary:The iodine-methanol immersion test will evaluate cracks, flaws or porosity disrupting the continuity of thin anodized films on 2024 Al in 1 to 8 hr compared with 16 to 50 hr by previous methods. The test uses 5 g I/100 ml absolute methanol in a petri dish containing comparative samples. Anodic oxide films less than 0.2 micron used as surface preparation of structural adhesive bonding can be compared as the solution selectively attacks bare Al exposed by discontinuities. Correlation with 60 days of outdoor exposure is reported. Precautions to insure uniform results are outlined.--J.V.R.
