Description
Summary:The outwardly simple task of walking has emerged as an informative indicator of health in older adults. Indeed, disturbances in gait have been associated with aging and a multitude of aging-associated conditions, including sarcopenia, arthritis, cognitive impairment, hearing loss, cardiovascular disease, obesity, pulmonary disease, depression, and anxiety. Measures of gait are also powerful predictors of important later-life health events, including falls, frailty, loss of independence, institutionalization, and even death. the multifaceted nature of gait disturbances in older adults would seem most responsive to drug, cell, genetic, diet, and exercise interventions systemically targeting the fundamental biology of aging. Thus, the inclusion of gait parameters as an outcome measure in preclinical and clinical trials of emerging interventions in the field of geroscience should be strongly considered.
