Hem-o-lok Clip is a Safe Alternative in the Laparoscopic Treatment of Perforated Appendicitis

Description
Summary:In a comparison of the two groups in terms of age, length of hospital stay, gender, abscess formation, morbidity, and mortality, the mean length of hospital stay was shorter in patients treated with the clip application, whereas the other parameters of the two groups were similar (Table 1). The debate on which is the best method is still ongoing.1 Previous studies have excluded patients with perforated appendicitis from clip applications,2, 3 whereas the present study is the first to report on the use of Hem-o-lok clips in patients with a sufficient amount of intact appendiceal tissue below the perforation site for the placement of clips to the radix.4 The similar morbidity and mortality results in patients treated with Hem-o-lok clip closure and ligation with 2/0 silk suture suggest that this rapid method can be performed as safely in patients with perforated appendicitis as it can in patients with unperforated appendicitis. [...]the present study favors the use of Hem-o-lok clips in patients with perforated appendicitis undergoing laparoscopic surgery, although there is a need for further retrospective studies to support the reliability of the clip closure technique in patients with perforated appendicitis, which has been reported in many studies to be the main reason for conversion to open surgery.
