Summary:High-temperature deformation behavior in unidirectionally solidified eutectic Al2O3-Y3Al5O12 single crystals for a specimen with a compressive axis inclined by 0, 45 or 90 deg to the solidification direction was examined by uniaxial compression testing in argon flow at temperatures between 1773 and 1973 K. High-temperature yield stress at 1873 K under an initial strain rate of 1 x 10 exp -4/s in a 0-deg specimen is 430 Mpa, which is much higher than that in sintered Al2O3-YAG composite with the same composition.
