Description
Summary:Experimental results on the broadening coefficient of several Raman lines of CO2 perturbed by rare gases are presented. These are compared with theoretical calculations of the broadening coefficients on the basis of Van Kranendonk's (1963) theory, which is slightly modified to avoid some simplifying assumptions. The variation of the calculated broadening coefficients with J is much larger than is observed experimentally. It is shown that the effect of elastic collisions that disorient the CO2 molecule are probably inadequately accounted for by Van Krankendonk's use of a perturbation method limited to second order for the calculation of the matrix elements of the evolution S matrix during CO2-rare gas collisions.
