Summary: | Selected compositions of tantalum carbide composites containing excess free carbon and tungsten-rhenium were tested for erosion resistance at 1800 °C and room temperature. Specimens were fabricated at 2150 °C using hot pressing techniques. Tantalum carbide exhibited superior erosion resistance at both temperatures and displayed evidence of cutting erosion only. Graphite and hafnia-tungsten composites exhibited less erosion resistance at both temperatures and displayed evidence of both cutting and deformation erosion. |
