Summary:The Defense Dept. (DOD) realizes the importance of developing new applications for flat-panel displays, particularly as replacements for dials and other instruments in military equipment. However, the development of such applications has been hindered by the absence of industrial capability to mass-produce flat-panel displays. After careful study, the DOD published recommendations for stimulating research which are contained in the National Flat-Panel Display Initiative. A discussion of three key elements of the initiative is presented.
