Description
Summary:A historical description of the region and a structural analysis of a unique bridge using finite elements, show the British exceptional know-how in building stone bridges with arches back in 1826. The bridge can be looked upon today as an excellent example for building such large structures, capable to withstand earthquakes, using materials from the nearby fields. A special feature of the bridge is the large cylindrical holes located between the arches. Our analysis shows the importance of these holes. Not only in reducing weight, but also in reducing the stiffness of the bridge there by r
