Description
Summary:Depth-averaged flow and mass transport in a channel with a composite cross section, consisting of two rectangular portions with different depths, is studied. The problem is solved sequentially, with the results of the flow problem providing the necessary input in the mass transport equation. The solution is obtained via a code which is based on the SIMPLER algorithm. Velocity profiles are com- pared with available experimental values, while concentration distributions are compared qualitatively with the results of a similar experiment. The agreement is satisfactory, giving promise that the method can be extended to channels of arbitrary cross section. INTRODUCTION Transport and mixing of pollutants in streams is of great importance in environmental impact studies. Pollutant
