Plasma Heating in a High-Voltage Toroidal θ Pinch

Summary: | Rapid heating of ions and electrons to keV temperatures in less than about 1 microsec has been observed at densities of 10 to the 14th per cu cm. This is to be compared with experiments in which energy losses along the magnetic field limit the electron temperature. The most striking difference is in the ratio of electron to ion temperature which is now less than about 0.3 as in comparable open-ended theta pinches. |
