Summary: | The fundamental mechanisms of sliding wear postulated by the delamination theory of wear are reviewed in terms of the experimental and analytical work done to date at MIT. Each of the rate determining processes involved in delamination wear,
i.e. plastic deformation of the surface layer, crack nucleation and crack propagation, is discussed for various metals with different microstructures. The effects of sliding speed, lubricants and complex loading on wear are also discussed. A hypothesis (without experimental verification) is advanced for the formation of the Beilby layer. Various dislocation mechanisms that might be responsible for the “dislocation depleted layer” are considered. |
