Description
Summary:The normal inertness of lithium to SOCl2 and SO2 battery electrolytes changes dramatically if the Li has first been ground with carbon black. Spontaneous ignition on mixing then becomes common, especially with SOCl2 electrolyte. The effect of the nature and proportion of carbon in Li-C grinds on their reactivity was examined. It is concluded that the carbon's external surface area acting via local electrochemical cells is crucial to its catalytic activity.
