Description
Summary:Multi-directional discs of carbon fibre-reinforced plastics were subjected to transverse dynamic loading by their own inertia. This was obtained using a machine with a spring-loaded arm which accelerated the disc and ring to a velocity of up to 30 m/s. The ring was arrested by impinging against a rigid anvil which ensured deformation of the disc under its own inertia force. The bursting strength of the composite disc was obtained and, together with high speed photography, the time taken to burst was found. Photography also gave an estimate of the delamination crack propagation speeds once the disc had burst and some insight into the bursting mechanism.
