Description
Summary:A simplified apparatus which employs a laser beam for heating and a specimen and Cu-cooled anvils for the rapid cooling of the molten globule is described. The technique described is used for the formation of metastable alloy phases by rapid cooling. Advantages given for the apparatus are: high melting point materials can be melted with a reasonable power laser, the oxidation of the specimen is minimized because the entire operation is extremely rapid, there is no container problem since the specimen rests on a relatively massive Cu plate, no complex triggering device is needed to close the anvils because the laser beam can be kept on while the Cu anvil is in motion. Materials tested include 70Ti--30Ni, 90.65Pd--4.22Cd--5.13Si.8 refs.--P.E.E.
